Okay, so I’m a music lover. I think in lyrical terms. The title of this blog comes from a Michele’ (pronounced me-shel-LAY) song of the same title. I’m feeling that way right now. I just finished a Power Point deck that has been in my heart and on my mind for a while now. It’s geared to inner city teens and is my humble attempt to impart some wisdom I’ve accumulated in my several decades here.
I grew up in the inner city. For several years we lived in the Pruitt-Igoe housing complex in St. Louis. I was a smart kid, so I learned early on to watch and learn from other people what and what not to do. I was the middle child, so I saw numerous examples of what not to do. But my cocoon of a home saved me from some of the wretchedness of what was going on outside of the walls of our apartment.
Anyway, sometimes the things you need to be told to get a good start off in life you don’t get told. Crucial support/information/examples may not be easily available when you’re poor or working class in the city. Somebody has to tell them these crucial rules. I volunteer. No child left behind, remember?
